UPDATE OF THE EUROPEAN STRATEGY FOR PARTICLE PHYSICS

Proposed Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics by the European Strategy Group
(White Paper)

Deliberation document on the European Strategy for Particle Physics by the European Strategy Group (Edited by the Scientific Secretariat of the European Strategy Session of Council)
(CERN/SPC/1005- CERN-Council-S/103)

The Council took note of the proposed update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics drawn up by the European Strategy Group and set out in the tabled White Paper, of the information on the background to the proposal set out in document CERN/SPC/1005-CERN-Council-S/103, of the presentation by the Scientific Secretary and the report by the Chairman of the Scientific Policy Committee.

Following a round-table discussion during which delegations expressed appreciation for the quality of the document and acknowledged the extent of scientific debate that had gone into its preparation at the Drafting Session in Erice in January, the Council agreed, by consensus, that the draft update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, as set out in the White Paper and with three minor wording amendments agreed during the discussion, should be submitted for formal adoption to the special European Strategy Session of the Council in Brussels on 30 May 2013.

The Council commended all the members of the European Strategy Group, the Preparatory Group and the Scientific Secretariat for their hard work on the Strategy update over the past eighteen months, and in particular Professor Nakada for his wise leadership of the update process.
