PRESIDENT'S REPORT

The Council took note of the information provided by the President regarding the arrangements for the forthcoming FALC meeting to be held at Fermilab from 12 to 13 November 2012.

 

SCIENTIFIC SECRETARY'S REPORT

  • General status report

The Council took note of the oral report by the Scientific Secretary, Professor Nakada, covering the status of implementation of FP7 programme projects in the framework of the current European Strategy for Particle Physics and the progress of the Strategy update process.

  • Report on the Open Symposium, Krakow, 10-12 September 2012

The Council took note of the report by Professor Nakada on the discussions at the Open Symposium held in Krakow from 10 to 12 September 2012, the work being done by the five working groups set up by the European Strategy Group (ESG) to discuss non-physics aspects of the Strategy update, and the schedule of ESG and other milestone meetings leading up to the adoption of the updated Strategy by the Council in Brussels on 22 May 2013.

 

ECFA MATTERS

  • Report on ECFA Activities

The Council took note of the report on ECFA's activities from September 2011 to August 2012, as set out in document CERN/SPC/993 - CERN-Council-S/097 and of the presentation by the ECFA Chairman, Professor Krammer.
 

  • Report on ICFA meeting

The Council took note of a second oral report by Professor Krammer recalling the purpose, organisation and membership of ICFA and summarising the items relevant to the European Strategy Session of the Council discussed at ICFA’s 2012 meetings.

 

EC-CERN WORK PLAN, STATUS AND ANNUAL MEETING

The Council took note of the summary of activities in the different areas of cooperation between CERN and the EC during the period to August 2012 in the framework of the 2012-2013 work plan, as set out in document CERN-Council-S/098 and of the presentation by Dr Stavrev.

 

STATUS REPORT - TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER NETWORK

The Council took note of the report on the activities of the Technology Transfer Network of institutions active in particle, astroparticle and nuclear physics (HEPTech), as set out in document CERN/SPC/994 - CERN-Council-S/099, and of the presentation by the HEPTech coordinator, Mr Tracey.

 

REPORT FROM THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK

The Council took note of the report on the activities of the European Particle Physics Communication Network over the last twelve months, as set out in document CERN/SPC/995 CERN-Council-S/100, of the presentation by Dr Gillies regarding, in particular, the coverage of the OPERA neutrino announcements and the 4 July seminar on the discovery of a Higgs-like boson, and the communications plans for the special Council Session to adopt the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics in Brussels in May 2013.
