Secretariat of the European Strategy Session of Council

The Secretariat of the European Strategy Session of Council was established by the CERN Council in March 2008, with the primary task of acting as an interface between the European Strategy Session of Council and the European particle physics community related to the update and follow up of the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics.

The first European Strategy for Particle Physics was approved by the CERN Council in a Special Restricted Session in July 2006. Acting as a council for European Particle Physics the CERN Council define and update the strategy based on proposals and observations from a dedicated scientific body established for this purpose, the Strategy Secretariat.

The Secretariat has the following main tasks:

  • to follow up the implementation of the Strategy on a permanent basis and submit related reports to the European Strategy Sessions of Council,
  • to interact with the European laboratories and other bodies on the implementation of the Strategy,
  • to prepare proposals for discussion and approval by the European Strategy Session of Council which are related to its follow-up of the implementation of the Strategy,
  • to prepare the five-yearly European Strategy Group (ESG) Meeting, as part of the Preparatory Group. This ad hoc Preparatory Group is formed in the run-up to the ESG meeting, and comprises four members nominated by the SPC, four members nominated by ECFA and the four members of the Secretariat.

The Secretariat composition is as follows:

  • Scientific Secretary, elected by the Council at the European Strategy Session to lead the secretariat,
  • the SPC Chair,
  • the ECFA Chair,
  • the representative of the European Laboratory Directors' meeting elected by the latter to attend the European Strategy Sessions.
