PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The President gave an oral report on the following matters:

  • Participation in meetings of CERN bodies and ICFA, FALC and LCB
  • Informal meetings with delegations.

 

DIRECTOR GENERAL’S REPORT

The Director-General gave an oral report on the following matters:

  • Recent news on the International Linear Collider (ILC) project
  • Main future projects proposed by the CERN community in the Strategy update (CLIC, FCC, PBC)
  • High-level meetings in the USA
  • Celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Worldwide Web
  • Update on the Science Gateway project

 

LHC MATTERS

The Council heard a presentation by the Director for Accelerators and Technology, Dr Bordry, on the scope and status of the maintenance, consolidation and upgrade activities being carried out on the accelerator and injector complex in the framework of the second long shutdown (LS2), the associated schedules, details of logistics, including storage and space management, and the structure in place for coordinating the work and the related safety aspects.

The Council also heard a presentation by the Director for Research and Computing, Professor Elsen, on the status of the LHC experiments and computing, including details of the major upgrades and other projects to be completed during LS2 and a selection of the latest physics results, as well as progress of the experiments at the antiproton decelerator (AD) facility.

 

SITE AND BUILDING RENOVATION STATUS

The Council heard a report on the status of the consolidation and renovation of site infrastructure and buildings, the associated planning and budget frameworks, the methodology for determining the strategy and priorities for consolidation work as well as for new buildings and extensions and the status of the 2030 CERN Masterplan.

 

EUROPEAN STRATEGY MATTERS

The Council heard a presentation by the Strategy Secretary for the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, Professor Abramowicz, covering the preparations for the Granada Open Symposium from 13 to 16 May and the agenda for the first meeting of the European Strategy Group on 15 March 2019. It also took note of the updated composition of the European Strategy Group, set out in document CERN/SPC/1115/Rev.-CERN/3389/Rev.

 

CLOSED SESSION

 

ELECTION

The Council elected Professor J. Schieck (Austria) Vice-President of the Council for a first term of office of one year, with effect from 1 July 2019.

 

ENLARGEMENT PROCESS

The Council heard a report by the Director-General on the status of the ongoing applications of Brazil, Croatia, Estonia and Serbia.

 

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTING AND APPOINTING THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF CERN: INITIATION OF THE SELECTION PROCEDURE

The Council decided to institute the Search Committee for the next Director-General of CERN, composed as follows:

  • Dr F. Sette

  • Professors B. Heinemann, C. Biscari, G. Martinelli and H. Montgomery, as members elected by the Scientific Policy Committee,

  • Dr U. Bassler, President of Council

  • Professor J-J. Gaardhøje[1], Vice-President of Council

  • Professor P. Levai, Vice-President of Council

  • Professor K. Ellis, SPC Chair

  • Mr O. Malmberg, FC Chair.

In the same context, the Council approved the detailed qualification profile, the text of the advertisement and the channels for publication of the vacancy notice.

 

THANKS AND FAREWELL

The Council expressed thanks and appreciation to Ms C. Durkin and Dr P. Pulkkinen, who were standing down as delegates for the United Kingdom and Finnish delegations respectively.
